Education

The origins of the Graduate Program in Education are intimately connected to the centennial educational tradition of the La Salle network in Brazil. It has operated for more than 40 years in higher education in the city of Canoas and the metropolitan area, creating partnerships between city and state powers for teacher training in order to implement public policies in the educational field. The program also supports partnerships between teachers and researchers from international institutions such as Utah State University and Maryland University – College Park, in the United States, Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and Universidad de La Laguna in Spain, Universidad do Algarve and Universidad de Lisboa in Portugal, Université Lyon 1 in France, Universidad Del Atlántico in Colombia, and Universidad de Los Lagos in Chile.

Goals

Overall Goal
Enhance the understanding about the education phenomenon, starting from the theory and practice of scientific research dedicated to professional training and/or advanced education, and the production and dissemination of knowledge in the field of education.

Specific Goals
– Analyzing, evaluating, and proposing action strategies for the different levels, types of education, and education systems;
– Investigating teacher training processes, starting from the emerging fields proposed by education theories and practices and discussing the learning strategies for human development;
– Analyzing the management of public policies and their impacts on schools and social movements and organizations, considering the different notions of democracy, state, and participatory citizenship;
– Investigating digital and virtual technologies, their languages, and their impacts on education.

Areas of Study

The Program concentrates its research in the area of Education, aligning it with various analyses of models of teacher education in relation to educational practices, teaching and learning processes, and human development. It also studies educational management in the context of educational and social policies, as well as in relation to educational institutions. It investigates the multiple relationships between education, digital and virtual technologies and their didactic-pedagogical and cultural implications in the contemporary world.

Lines of Research

Doctoral Program Structure

Regular student: 32 credits, divided into 18 required credits, 14 elective credits. Foreign language proficiency: Guidelines for the Proficiency Exam – This exam is a demanded by CAPES and fixed by La Salle University regulations (art. 41 and 42 of the Graduation Program in Education Rules, CONSUN Resolution nr. 667/14). Coordinations recommend students to take the Proficiency Exam until the 2nd semester. It is possible to take these exams at La Salle language Institute – Unidiomas, where in June and November there is an open public notice for the academic community and external public. Follow the publication of the notice at Unidiomas’ website. Qualification for the dissertation project: The qualification exam is required and a prerequisite for the final presentation. It is done when the student has fulfilled all credits of the required courses. The qualification exam is done by an examination board, composed by at least 3 (three) members with PhD level and the adviser. In the PhD Program, students must qualify in the maximum deadline of 24 months. Dissertation approved in public presentation: The minimum duration for the Doctorate Course, including the presentation of the dissertation is of 24 (twenty-four) months, with maximum of 48 (forty-eight) months, from the beginning of the first academic year when the student has enrolled in the Program. Special Student: Special students are non-regular students, who are enrolled in one or more elective courses offered by the Program, in this condition, totalizing the maximum of 12 credits.

Master Program Structure

Regular Student: 28 credits, divided into 10 required credits (Research Methodology in Education (3 credits), thesis meetings (4 credits), Complementary Activities (3 credits) and 18 elective credits (courses, seminars and directed readings).
